INTERNET SAFETY
Do you know how many computers are connected to you while you are surfing the
World Wide Web or chatting with your online friends?
Even though you are directly in touch with just your computer, a surprisingly large number
of computers are connected to you! In fact, it is this large network of interconnected
computers that enables you to suf the web or communicate with your friends. Collectively.
this large global group of interconnected computer networks is called the Internet.
The Intemnet is a global network of milions of computers
(and the data stored on them) connected together by telephone lines,
cables or satellites Over which they can exchange information.
Just as the postal service enables us to send one another envelopes Containing messages,
the Internet enables computers to send each other small packets of digital data.
The Internet is used for a variety of reasons such as to access information, book railway
tickets, shop, listen to music, watch movies, play games, share photos, read books, chat,
video conference and stay in touch with dear ones.
Communication is the most popular use of the Internet.
However, there is an important difference between communicating in the real
world and in the virtual world of Internet: in the real world you can see
the person you are talking to, but on the Internet
you can never be certain about the identity of the person at the other end.
Hence, it is important to follow a few basic rules
such as do not talk to strangers, do not be rude and other safety rules similar to
what you were taught when you were young.
The Internet is a valuable tool for research, entertainment and knowledge,
and like any other tool it too should be put to good use.
With a bit of caution we can surf smartly, chat safely, share without Compromising our
privacy and harness all the fun and the limitless information
that the Internet has to offer!
